WoW Forever Classes and Class Quiz
Last updated:
Choosing a class is the biggest decision you make before launch night. This page gives you a quick overview of every class, the roles it can fill and its three talent specializations, followed by a short quiz. For everything else about the game, start at the WoW Forever home page.
Important: the role and spec information below describes how these classes work in original World of Warcraft. Blizzard says Forever adds “new abilities, new race and class combinations, and updates designed to preserve the feel of the original game,” focused on “talents and abilities you notice” and “meaningful trade-offs.” TODO: verify — final class list and any per-class ability/talent changes in WoW Forever (no official per-class list found).

The classes in brief
Warrior. The classic main tank and, once geared, one of the strongest melee damage dealers. Warriors generate rage by dealing and taking damage, which makes them slow and gear-dependent while leveling solo but always wanted in groups.
Paladin. A plate-wearing hybrid with blessings, auras and strong self-healing. Historically best known as a raid healer; very hard to kill while leveling. In original WoW Paladins were Alliance-only. TODO: verify — faction/race availability of Paladins in Forever (Blizzard references Forsaken Paladins in the Warcraft III tie-in).
Hunter. Ranged physical damage with a permanent tamed pet that can tank for you. Usually considered the most beginner-friendly and fastest solo leveler.
Rogue. Stealth, combo points and energy. Excellent burst damage, crowd control like Sap, and a natural fit for world PvP.
Priest. The archetypal healer, with strong buffs. Shadow is a self-sufficient damage spec that many players use for leveling and PvP.
Shaman. Totems, Chain Heal and the ability to cast, heal or fight in melee. In original WoW Shaman were Horde-only; in Forever, Blizzard says Horde-aligned Skyborne gain access to Shaman.
Mage. Ranged spell damage with crowd control (Polymorph), conjured food and water, teleports and portals. Strong area-of-effect farming. Blizzard says Alliance-aligned Skyborne gain access to Mage.
Warlock. Damage over time, fear and demon pets. Warlocks summon party members and make Healthstones, and are self-sufficient when soloing.
Druid. A shapeshifter that can tank as a bear, deal damage as a cat or moonkin, or heal. Blizzard says Forever adds new Skyborne druid forms.
The Skyborne and new combinations
The Skyborne are the new race in WoW Forever, starting on Zephras Isle (levels 1–12). At character creation you choose a faction. Horde Skyborne can be Shaman; Alliance Skyborne can be Mage; both can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues and Druids. The race is unlocked through the upgrade editions described on our price page.
How to choose
- Want to be needed in every group? Tank or heal: Warrior, Paladin, Priest, Druid or Shaman.
- Want to level easily alone? Hunter or Warlock.
- Want flexibility? Druid or Shaman can switch roles with a respec.
- Want to dominate world PvP? Rogue, Warlock or Mage are historic favorites.

Which classes are best for groups?
This is based on how groups were built in original WoW and WoW Classic, not on Forever-specific tuning, which Blizzard has not detailed.
- Tanks — Warriors are the traditional main tank. Protection Paladins and Feral Druids can also tank, especially in 5-player dungeons.
- Healers — Priests, Paladins, Shaman and Restoration Druids. Healers are usually in short supply, so they find groups fastest.
- Utility — Mages (food, water, portals), Warlocks (summons, Healthstones), Shaman (totems) and Paladins (blessings) each bring something a group misses without them.
- Damage — Rogues, Mages, Warlocks, Hunters and Fury Warriors are the classic damage dealers, and there are usually more of them than tanks or healers.
Forever’s new raids are 10 and 20 players (the Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit), smaller than Classic’s 40-player raids, so a single missing role is felt more. TODO: verify — raid composition and any role changes in Forever.
How to pick a class: a checklist
Before you commit on launch night, run through these questions. They take a few minutes and save a reroll later.
- Which role do you enjoy? If tanking or healing appeals, you will rarely wait for groups.
- How much do you solo? Pet classes (Hunter, Warlock) are the most self-sufficient in Classic.
- Which faction are your friends on? Faction affects race options. Skyborne join either faction at character creation.
- Do you want the new race? Horde Skyborne can be Shaman; Alliance Skyborne can be Mage; both can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues and Druids.
- Do you like PvP? Rogues, Warlocks and Mages are historic world-PvP favorites; Forever adds a new 15 vs 15 battleground.
- How much time do you have? Hybrids can fill several roles but need separate gear sets; specialists are simpler to gear.
- Have you tried it? If you are in the beta, play two or three classes to level 10 before deciding.
Race and class combinations
Original WoW limits which races can play which classes, and Forever adds new combinations. Blizzard has confirmed the Skyborne options above and references Forsaken Paladins in the Warcraft III tie-in. TODO: verify — the complete race/class matrix for Forever, including all new combinations.
Coming soon
Detailed per-class guides (talents, leveling builds and best-in-slot gear) will be added once Blizzard publishes final class details. For now, compare the overall game to Classic on the vs Classic page.
