How to Download and Install WoW Forever

Last updated:

World of Warcraft: Forever is not a separate store product you download from a third-party shop. Like WoW Classic, it lives inside the World of Warcraft entry in Blizzard’s Battle.net desktop app. This guide walks through installation, explains the account requirements, and collects what is known about system requirements. New here? Read the WoW Forever overview first.

Before you install: account checklist

  1. A Battle.net account. Free to create at Blizzard’s website.
  2. An active WoW Subscription or Game Time. Blizzard says this is required to play Forever. Editions like the Skyborne Epic Pack include 30 days of Game Time starting November 4. See the price page.
  3. Optional: an upgrade edition if you want the Skyborne race, Early Name Reservation or beta access.
  4. Two-factor authentication. Not strictly required, but strongly recommended for any Blizzard account; attaching an authenticator protects your characters.

Step-by-step: download WoW Forever

  1. Download and install the Battle.net app from Blizzard’s official site (blizzard.com). Avoid unofficial download mirrors.
  2. Log in with your Battle.net account.
  3. Open the World of Warcraft tab in the game library.
  4. Use the game version dropdown above the Install/Play button and select World of Warcraft: Forever. TODO: verify — exact label in the dropdown (e.g. “World of Warcraft: Forever” vs “WoW Forever”).
  5. Click Install, choose an install folder, and wait for the download to complete.
  6. When the servers open on November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST, click Play.

If you were in the beta, the beta client is a separate entry in the same dropdown. Remove it after the beta ends on October 21 to free up disk space.

TODO: verify — pre-download / pre-install start date for the launch client.

System requirements

Blizzard has not published Forever-specific requirements that we could verify. Because Forever offers both modern (HD) and Standard-Definition character models plus new rendering effects such as flowing rivers and mist, requirements may differ from WoW Classic.

Controller and display options

Blizzard announced official gamepad support for Forever, so you can play with a controller without third-party tools. It also announced HD and SD character-model options, restored Classic animations for HD models, and modern and Classic visual presets. If your PC struggles, switching to SD models and the Classic preset is a sensible first step once the client is available.

Troubleshooting common install problems

  • “Play” is greyed out. Check that your subscription or Game Time is active and that the servers are open; before launch, the button will only work for beta or name reservation windows.
  • Download stuck at 0%. Restart the Battle.net app, pause and resume the download, or switch the download region in the app settings.
  • Not enough disk space. Uninstall old PTR or beta clients from the same dropdown.
  • Antivirus blocking the launcher. Allow the Battle.net app and the game folder in your security software.
  • Slow login queues on launch night. This is a server-side issue; staying connected in the queue is usually faster than restarting.

Launch-night install checklist

Do these in the days before November 4 so you are not downloading while everyone else logs in.

  1. Update the Battle.net app and restart it once.
  2. Free up disk space — remove old beta or PTR clients you no longer need.
  3. Install on an SSD if you have one; load times in busy cities are much shorter.
  4. Update your graphics drivers from your GPU vendor’s website.
  5. Pre-install the client as soon as Blizzard opens it. TODO: verify — pre-install date
  6. Log in once before launch (for example during Early Name Reservation, October 27 – November 3, if you own an upgrade) to confirm everything works.
  7. Attach an authenticator to your Battle.net account.
  8. Set your keybinds and UI early, or plan to copy settings from Classic. TODO: verify — whether Classic settings or add-ons can be copied to Forever.

Fixing performance problems

Forever adds new rendering effects — flowing rivers in Elwynn Forest, mist over Darkshore, moonlight in Ashenvale — and HD character models, so it may be more demanding than Classic. If your frame rate is low:

  • Switch to SD character models and the Classic visual preset.
  • Lower view distance and environment detail first; these usually cost the most in open-world areas.
  • Cap the frame rate in the game’s system settings to reduce heat and fan noise on laptops.
  • Close overlays (recording, chat or browser apps) that compete for the GPU.
  • Use the dedicated GPU on laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics.

These are general World of Warcraft settings; exact menu names in Forever may differ. TODO: verify — Forever graphics settings menu names.

Add-ons

Add-ons have been part of WoW since the original game, and Classic supports them. Whether Classic add-ons work in Forever unchanged depends on its interface version and API. TODO: verify — add-on support and interface version for Forever. Install add-ons only from reputable sources and keep a backup of your WTF folder, where WoW stores your settings.
